A reminder that the 2014 Audlem Lass sailing season between Lock 15 and the Overwater Marina comes to an end this weekend.

So this coming Saturday and Sunday are your last chance to enjoy the trip along the canal. Sailings start at 11.00am at Overwater Marina, returning from Lock 15 at 11.15am until 3.45pm when the final sailing leaves Lock 15.

Just in case you missed our earlier report, 2014 has been another excellent year for the Audlem Lass Boat Service which raises funds for the lifeboat charity, the RNLI.

Over its four year life, the boat has carried almost 17,000 human passengers – with the large number of dogs also carried, the figures leap well above that.

This year, the figures are as follows, but do not include last weekend and this coming Saturday and Sunday:

  • 3,309 adults
  • 944 children
  • 351 dogs
  • 4,253 total
  • plus numerous bicycles, scooters, pushchairs and buggies

Adults have been paying £1 per one-way trip and children 50p. Dogs travel free because they rarely have any money on them!

Total fares collected, again upto Sunday 12th October, amounts to £3,935.50. And some good news – fares will remain the same in 2015, therefore unchanged for 5 years.

Audlem Lass is run by a team of twenty two fully-trained skippers, all local volunteers and the service runs from early April until the last weekend of October.

The boat will, however, be making its annual appearance conveying Father Christmas to the 'Big Switch On' on Thursday 27th November at 6.00pm. Look out for a story detailing this event shortly.
