Last season Audlem played Cougars twice and each time it was a close fought game, Audlem winning once and drawing the other game. Sunday's encounter was a thrilling, fast paced game in which both teams had chances to win. The first period was very evenly balanced and was mainly played out in the midfield area. Both teams were passing the ball but good, solid defending was making opportunities scarce. 0-0 at the end of the first period.

The second period saw a great many more scoring opportunities created. Audlem's goalkeeper made two instinctive saves whilst at the other end Audlem's strikers probed for an opening. When a clear chance finally came, it was denied due to a very clumsy tackle by the last Cougars' man. It could have easily been a penalty but nothing was given. Again there was no scoring in the period, despite the super football on display.

The third and final period was genuine, end to end, exciting action. Cougars hit the Audlem post direct from a corner, and again from the rebound! Audlem fired shots hard and low but couldn't break through. Finally though, the game's clearest chance presented itself. A quick Audlem goalkeeping clearance set the striker free. He raced through the Cougars' half of the pitch, ball at feet. As he reached the penalty area he shot hard with his left foot to produce a fantastic save from the keeper. Fortunately for Audlem, the rebound fell to the same player who smashed it home, this time right footed.

The remaining 3 minutes was filled up with Cougars pressurising the Audlem goal. A series of FIVE corners, one after the other, was superbly defended until the ref ended our agonising wait with the final whistle. A great game, super skill from both sides but a deserved 1-0 victory for Audlem. Played 3, won 3 is not a bad start to the season! Next up it's Nantwich Tigers, Sunday 8th Oct Kick off 12.10pm.
