It's a Small World

At the recent Audlem Lass Boat Service Annual General Meeting on 29th March held at Overwater Marina, a new recruit, Eric, a relatively new resident of Audlem village, found himself seated beside Graham, a fellow volunteer.

During their chat, Eric told Graham that he had been a marine engineer in the Merchant Navy sailing with Blue Funnel Line, Liverpool; then working ashore as a ship repair manager for a local Hull company, repairing the trawler fleets and other types of vessels. In 1976 Eric went to Bahrain and joined the management of The Bahrain Ship Repair & Engineering Company BASREC, a Bahrain owned public company. In 1979 he was appointed CEO of BASREC and stayed for 21 years until he retired.

Graham was in the Royal Navy for 31 years during which time he was loaned to the Sultan of Oman's Navy SON and, as commanding officer of the SNV AL FULK, he was tasked to take his ship from Muscat into the gulf to the BASREC shipyard where – you guessed it – he met and had many meetings with Eric whilst the ship was being re-fitted.

This was in 1982 – 35 years later, they meet again thanks to the Audlem Lass Boat Service, giving them more opportunities to fill in the gaps of what they have both been up to during those 35 years. SMALL WORLD!
