I used to cycle a bit as a youngster but living in Bath which reminded the Romans of Rome with its seven surrounding hills it was not the easiest place.

Then a few bad experiences with lorries on the A525 limited me to using the towpath to and from the shops recently.

After a few rides with ADAPT on traffic-light routes (some parts traffic free, then lanes and the absolute minimum on main roads), I realised that by just keeping those legs turning you could actually get somewhere.

I wanted to see the Tour of Britain go through Nantwich and I wanted to try the route to Nantwich we had discussed.

We had gone all the way to Nantwich Marina on the towpath but I found that rather hard work with the bumpy surface so I tried the combination of towpath and Coole Pilate lane which worked a treat.

It was pointed out that bridge 82 where the lane crosses the canal there were steps which mean't the bike had to be carried. If you carry on under the next bridge, 83, there is a ramp to a short track which leads to the tarmac. Very little in the way of ups and downs and about 100 yards along the A535 to the paths around Shrewbridge lake and there I was in Nantwich.

It had taken 50 minutes from my door.

Watching the race was fun but I couldn't recognise anyone! The photos show the leading group of 4 which was 6 minutes ahead of the rest and then the main pack. I gather yesterday's stage was won by a Belgian rider,

I have been disappointed not to see it on TV and just a few inches in the newspapers.
