A resident in Stafford Street has contacted Audlem Online after finding her garden wall has been damaged, almost certainly by a large vehicle:

"I am not sure what time of day the incident occurred; on my return from work early evening on Friday I was greeted by the damage to my next door neighbours' and my wall.

"I quickly opened my door expecting to find a note apologising for the damage and contact details of who was responsible. I was bitterly disappointed to find that there was no note and when I approached my neighbours they were also unable to tell me what had happened.

"I know you are all probably tired of hearing about the speeding traffic in Stafford Street and drivers constantly using the pavement as an extension of the road, avoiding the need to slow down but, surely it is not acceptable that I fear for my life every time I step out of my front door.

"I already have a mobility impairment which means that I am unable to dodge the traffic that mount the pavement as I walk down the street. All I can do is stand there praying to God that they manage to avoid me and in addition I now have to pay for the repair to my wall.

"The damage to the wall was reported to the police on Friday who really didn't want to get involved but, after much protesting, I was advised that a police person would contact me to discuss the incident further. It is now Sunday evening and as yet no one from Cheshire police has contacted me.

"So, if anyone did witness the vehicle that hit my wall, can you please contact Audlem Online with any details – it will be greatly appreciated."

Since this story was first published early this morning, the following comment has been received from GB: "Re footway driving and wall damage in Stafford Street: perhaps sooner or later someone with influence will ask for the kerb here to be brought up to its proper height."

Another Audlem resident writes: "I have just read the "incident in Stafford St" story, so thought I would share this with you:

"Yesterday I was outside the Co-op, parked correctly in our new pride and joy (another Honda) when an elderly driver came flying up Shropshire Street heading in the Whitchurch direction, trying to race the oncoming traffic, rather than give way outside the Co-op.

"I wasn't surprised when his door mirrors hit our car's mirror, though luckily, ours sprung back with only a minor scratch (not sure if his was broken or not). I took the driver's number, though will take no further action, unless I see the same vehicle repeat this teenage-like stupidity, in which case I will contact the police.

"This is a typical example of the abysmal driving we regularly see in the village, and if a child had darted out we all know what would have happened.

"I even start to wonder if some sort of signs might help, like near the church?"
