At the risk of offending at least half of our readership with that headline, we must explain that a play entitled 'Idle Women of the Wartime Waterways' is coming to Audlem shortly.

Written and performed by Heather Wastie and Kate Saffin, it will be at the Shroppie Fly on Tuesday 19th July starting at 7.30pm. It's about 1hr and 45min including an interval.

It's a double bill of theatre, poetry and music to whisk you back to the days of World War II. A shortage of crews to keep the working boats going brought a new breed of boater to the canal.

Young women, later nick-named Idle Women, took on the challenge of managing a pair of 72' narrow boats and 55 tons of cargo.

A summer evening at Audlem's waterside venue features Isobel's War (Kate Saffin) and Idle Women and Judies (Heather Wastie).

"A fantastic evening of poetry and theatre."
"An amazing poetic look into boating women and their contributions to the war effort."
"You wove a rich tapestry of real stories and experiences in devilish detail..."

It's an unticketed event with donations welcomed.
