Steve writes: "I witnessed a small dog being knocked down by a vehicle on Friday afternoon outside the Co-op after it ran into the road. I was first at the scene and picked up the dog who was in distress and had a head injury. The dog was named 'Woody'. I held him for a while and he calmed down and was then taken to the vets by his owner. Does anyone know how he is? If so can you let me know through the web-site please. I hope he's ok."

Updated 8th February at 9.10am – We are very sorry to report that we have received a message to say that Woody died at the vets. So very sad.

Julie Hesketh writes: "Thanks to Steve, and other villagers who have asked after Woody. Sadly he died at the vets.

"An initial examination had shown that he was reactive and had no threatening injuries. I had come away expecting to collect him later. He was immediately given treatment for shock and painkillers. But, once he was a bit calmer tests showed a very low blood count that, combined with the shock, may explain his sudden deterioration and death. The x-rays showed no broken bones or serious internal bleeding. I'm very grateful to Leonard Brothers vets for the sensitive way they treated Woody and indeed me.

"He was a very lively border terrier who escaped through our virtually unused side gate which, after an oil delivery earlier in the week must have been unsecured. I know he was impossible to catch when excited and I also know that kind people did try to get him before the accident. There is no blame at all to the van driver, who was very kind and concerned.

"But I will take the opportunity to ask drivers in the village to remember that there is very limited visibility in the area, and to be careful in their parking and driving through to minimise the risk to pedestrians crossing the road to the Methodist Chapel, shops and houses here. "
