Gerald Emerton spoke to the Audlem District History Society recently on the history of roofing – his professional field as leader of the internationally renowned firm for traditional roofs.

He is an excellent speaker and that talk was illustrated with a wide variety of slides.

Since then he has published a book covering some of the history of Acton. He has restored the old vicarage near to Acton Church and has become fascinated by the history of the church and village.

Acton was the mother parish of a much larger area formerly, as far South as Dodcott cum Wilkesley and including Nantwich.

As you might expect he is excellent on the fabric of the church but his knowledge extends to the local people and placenames including the possible course of events from the Romans to the present day.

Much of this development would be paralleled here in Audlem and we can learn to read the history of Audlem church from the changes at Acton Church.

The talk this week, Acton through the Ages, starts at 7.30pm on Thursday, 16th February, in the Audlem Scout and Guide Hall. All are welcome, no charge for members, £2 for visitors. Refreshment provided.
