Crewe – The Railway Colony

David Cooke's talk will describe the establishment and growth of Crewe from the 1840s. The Grand Junction Railway and its successor, the London and North Western Railway, built a new town for their employees, complete with all the services and amenities that state-of-the-art town planning and architecture could provide.

It was the Milton Keynes of its day!

It was a place, too, which reflected the Victorian values of paternalism and knowing your place in a very hierarchical society.

David, who was born in the colony, will also talk about the decline of railway manufacture in Crewe and the sad destruction of so many of the original buildings and community.

The meeting will take place on Thursday 15th February in the Scout and Guide Hall in Cheshire Street, Audlem and starts at 7.30pm.
