“A Hillfort that helped shape the Nation” was the title of the History Society Talk on May 17th given by archaeologist Malcolm Reid.

Malcolm has worked recently with English Heritage, who manage Old Oswestry. Aerial photography showed the tiered fortifications, and large dug bowls by one of two entrances.

Why two? Was this large fort actually an economic and cultural centre for Bronze Age populations from what is now Wales and England?

Malcolm then described the evidence for what is one of the most complete WW1 trench systems discovered within the fort, used to prepare troops for the Western Front a century ago.

Mr Reid has agreed to lead a visit to the Hillfort at Oswestry for members and friends of the Society on Wednesday, June 6th, meeting at the nearby Car Park at 11 a.m. (follow Hillfort signposts).  Anyone who would like to join the visit please contact as soon as possible:

Dorothy Jones – 811814   or John Whitehead – 812607    or Celia Bloor – 811260.
