Last night in Crewe, village representatives heard a hard-fought debate which resulted in the County and Borough's Highways and Transportation Local Joint Committee voting to re-debate at their next meeting the proposal to de-prime both the A525 through Audlem and the A51 from Woore to Nantwich.

At a previous meeting in April, after Cheshire, Staffordshire, Shropshire and West Midlands had jointly agreed to the de-priming of both roads, Cheshire's and Crewe & Nantwich's councillors had surprised everyone by narrowly rejecting the proposal to de-prime the A51 which could put the whole agreement at risk. It has emerged, however, that Cheshire County Council has submitted the relevant paperwork for the de-priming of the A525 to the Government Office West Midlands.

Local councillors Allan Richardson and Rachel Bailey argued for the issue to be re-debated and a new vote to be taken to overrule what they considered a mistaken decision in April – decisions can only be re-considered after six months have passed. A unanimous vote was eventually taken to fully consider the issue at the committee's next meeting in January. Background details on why de-priming is such an issue was included in yesterday's story 'A525 back in council spotlight tonight.'
