Cheshire East councillor David Brickhill has resigned from the council's cabinet for health reasons. He has been the portfolio holder for environmental services which includes highway repairs and the controversial car parking scheme which has attracted much newspaper coverage.

There have also been gritting problems in the north of the council's area which have attracted recent media attention in Macclesfield where David Brickhill was a councillor before moving to the Nantwich area.

David Brickhill is well-known to Audlem parish councillors and those campaigning for the de-priming of the A525. He was involved in a number of meetings and decisions which, campaigners believe, delayed the process for many months.

A year ago, he visited Audlem and was presented with a list of roads that were deemed dangerous and was asked to make their resurfacing a priority. These included Shropshire Street, outside the Moseley's Yard development, and Coole Lane.

He later promised, at a Joint Highways meeting, to make the resurfacing of Coole Lane a council priority. As yet, that has not happened.

A council spokesman said: "He will continue as ward member for Doddington and be able to take on additional duties when he has returned to health."

His replacement is expected to be announced before Friday.
