Ed : We received this letter on the topical subject of the Hatherton Bends incidents with possibly a new theory as to why so many occur at that location.
Just wanted to drop a note regarding the article on the road accidents at Hatherton. In the past 12 months I was unfortunate to spin my car and fortunately not encounter an oncoming vehilce.
On a previous occasion I was confronted with a car rolling onto its roof as it rounded the corner. I was able to assist the young driver from the car and with the help of Bob (Audlem Posty) warn other drivers until the police arrived.
On the occasion I spun, I had smelt diesel and felt the car go light on Hankelow corner and I had actually stopped to examine my car, before spinning off at very modest speed where all the subsequent accidents have occurred. Never experienced anything like it in 30 plus years of driving.
I suspect that there is fuel leaking on to the road from a previous spill in the adjoining field, or fuel is being lost from a commercial vehicle which is travelling this route regularly and is losing fuel on the bends.
