Gresty Road car park warning

Just a warning to anyone who uses the large car park in Gresty road in Crewe – a handy parking place for people using Crewe station.

This is a privately owned car park and I now know of at least four people who have received £100 fines for driving onto this car park, staying 10 minutes or so to collect people off the train, have not bought a car park ticket and then have received the fine through the post.

Cars are photographed on their way in and out of the car park and if no ticket has been purchased a fine is issued.

One person pulled over at 11.00pm to take a phone call as they were "on call" and was parked up no longer than 10 minutes, then received a fine!

AudlemOnline editor adds: I too have received a penalty ticket for £100. I paid the appropriate fee (for 12 hours and returned in 8) but it was impossible to type the correct car reg number as one of the rows of letter keys were not readable. Fortunately, I have two witnesses if they don't believe me and have the ticket with the slightly wrong car registration number printed on it.

I appealed two weeks ago and have said a fine will not be paid as it's their pay machine that caused the problem. I await a response from them.

I also understand it's near impossible to read the keys if it's dark when you try to pay and everyone is taking so long at the machines typing in car reg numbers and paying that it causes chaos at busy times.
