ASC Saints kicked off the 2009/10 season in style today, Sunday. Now playing in the South Cheshire Youth League, Under 11s Division 1, the fixture computer handed them a game against the team that had pipped them to the league title last season.

Well, it's not so much as a fixture computer, more a man with a pencil and a decent grasp of the alphabet that came up with the fixture ASC Saints Vs ASC Juniors on day one of the season!

The game was of a very good quality, played on grass at MMU Alsager. Saints started the brighter of the two teams and looked unstoppable going forward. Good measured passing was creating plenty of chances and it was thoroughly deserved when they soon went 2-0 up. Each goal was a well worked move, starting at the back , flowing through midfield and getting the finish the move demanded.

The opposition worked hard to get back into the game and scored a scrambled effort just before the half time break. 2-1 at the end of a very good half, played in excellent spirits.

At the start of the 2nd half, it was Saints' turn to look a little tired and they did well to survive a good 7 or 8 minutes pressure without conceding through superb defensive and goalkeeper work. The final phase of the game, though, saw Saints compete thoroughly for every ball, create chances and look like the excellent team they are. No further goals were added and Saints ran out deserved 2-1 winners.

The performance was an excellent one and one in which each player simply, but effectively, did his job. Each played to his allotted position, each chased back to put pressure on the opposition and each displayed plenty of skill when in possession... making it hard for spectators (and coaches!) to remember that these boys are just 10 & 11 years old and just learning the game!

A high standard set for the rest of the season – well done Saints!
