We are told that the refurbishment of the public toilets on the car park is proceeding well and should be complete in a couple of weeks.

Instead of the previous facilities which only took up a small part of the building, the new toilets – ladies, gentlemen and disabled – will use the whole building. The unpopular automatic ladies toilet, which occasionally trapped an unfortunate user, has been ripped out and replaced by conventional cubicles.

The whiteware is now installed and the cubicles, in an attractive shade of blue, are now in.

The exterior is to brightened up too. The black spaces on the front and sides that once boasted windows but have been boxed in for years, will now feature colourful Audlem scenes designed by local artist Jo Halden. Many will recognise them from the Audlem tea towel that has been on sale for several years.

It's also been spotted by an expert on geographical trivia that the toilets are the very first any visitor heading into the North of England will encounter, or conversely, the last public loos in the North if you are going south. That too, will be acknowledged on a small plaque.

The refurbishment is by local contractor CMS and the project is being supervised by local parish councillors Bill Consterdine and Mike Hill. Funding for the work has been provided by Cheshire East council who are in the process of handing over responsibility for the facility to Audlem Parish Council.

More on when the toilets will be open again as soon as news is available.
