General Data Protection Regulations

The new act comes into force on May 25th, and everyone is being bombarded by lots of e-mails from organisation that they have deliberately or accidentally "joined" on line.
This GDPR legislation applies to AudlemOnline just as it does to everyone else, and this article is designed to show how AoL follows the guidelines.

It is worth emphasising that AoL is a non-profit-making operation and never sells anything to anybody.

The AudlemOnline database

The AoL database is currently located at a commercially operated service centre at Keele University, with all the backing-up and anti-hacking guarantees that such centres provide.

E-mails

AoL receives e-mails (i.e. "letters to the editor") all the time – as with any e-mail system the e-mail address of the sender is kept within the e-mail system so that replies can be addressed.

Personal information is held on the AudlemOnline database in two other contexts.

Organisations

Any personal data that appears on directories is provided by the organisation itself and is presumed to be information that the organisation has provided specifically for the purpose of advertising its business or its aims and contacts.
This information will be available online to users of the website, and indeed this is its only real purpose.
The information will also be provided periodically to Audlem Parish Council for inclusion in Around Audlem.
It will not be provided by AudlemOnline directly to any other third party, although there is nothing to stop anyone looking through the directory data online in the usual way.
Any organisation can look at the information held on AudlemOnline for them by looking at their directory entry online. They can request the creation, amendment or removal of the data held for them, and an on-line form has been provided precisely for this purpose.

Individuals

Apart from such information as may be included in the organisation data described above, data for individuals is held on the AudlemOnline database only for security checking in the use of the chatbox and buy/sell features of AudlemOnline.
This consists of one or more "nicknames" set up by individual users themselves. These nicknames are password protected and cross-referenced internally to an e-mail address. This information is not available to other users and only to administrators of the system for legitimate reasons.
Users set these nicknames up themselves and administer them directly.
