From here to Twin Buktoo!

Yesterday's Independent newspaper carried an intriguing story that Timbuktoo is looking for a 'twin' community in Britain or elsewhere in Europe. Famous for the 'from here to Timbuktoo' phrase, the city says it's remote from anywhere, has lousy roads and is more easily reached by water. Could Audlem, which shares all three of these characteristics, be the 'here' that Timbuktoo seeks?

A spokesman from Timbuktoo says it appears most people don't even think the town exists, all because of that catchphrase. As a result, officials are searching for a UK location, however small (bingo, we really could be in with a chance!) to raise Timbuktoo's profile. The guidelines that have been set are that the twin must have a history of being an important trading hub – yes, Audlem definitely fits the bill; a centre of learning (our Old Grammar School and St James' primary); must boast unique architecture (we've lots), a cosmopolitan mindset (just look where we go on holiday – one member of the Audlem Webteam's in Peru at this very moment!) and its people should 'love the written word' (We've the Mobile Library and a Book Club). So, it could be argued we qualify on every count!

In return, of course, everyone in Timbuktoo, and possibly the rest of Mali – which has a great music scene up there with Audlem's – would constantly use the phrase "From here to Audlem." Entries need to be rushed in, however, as the winner of the Timbuktoo twinning search will be announced in London on 15th November.
