Early morning dog walkers spotted a young fox stranded at the foot of the gates in lock 8, which was empty. They called the RSPCA and the Canal & River Trust (CRT), also consulted local possible sources of help.
The RSPCA promised help but were beaten to it by the CRT rescuer, armed with suitable equipment, who very confidently allowed the lock to fill and expertly fished out the fox, who most ungraciously, but thankfully apparently unhurt, ran off at great speed.
The services of a local Animal Dispatcher were fortunately not required, and the fox is unavailable for comment.
