Yesterday's Scams article has attracted a few responses. One, from Julian Harrison, says:
"Having read the news article relating to email scams, this instance sounds like a low key version of the bit locker virus. In short prevention is better then cure in these situations.

"The only time you'll usually receive a legitimate email saying you need to confirm something is after you have intentionally signed up to something. Unexpected requests are usually scams I'm afraid.

"There isn't really a one stop solution if you are unavoidably hit by one of these scams but the first port of call should be a full virus scan then maybe use one of the freely available malware removal programs.

"If you really get stuck I'm happy to help, I'm listed in the Audlem Business section." (Simply type Techmedia into the Homepage Search box for contact details.)

A local resident added: "I just read the article about the Cheshire Police scam and similarly we have received emails from so-called BT broadband. They ask us to verify our account details by clicking on a link. The font and logos look identical to the real BT broadband however, when we checked by telephone, BT said they hadn't emailed us since March 2014."

All in all, the advice is be very cautious. As Julian says, "Unexpected requests are usually scams."
