The first Long ARS of the new year will be led by Kate Down
She proposes doing the Cannock Chase War Trail walk planned for December but cancelled due to inclement weather:-
The walk is 7 1/2 miles long with about 400 feet of ascent and descent – mostly along good tracks, although there were a couple of muddy sections when we reccied it.
The trail takes us past several sights of interest, including the Katyn Memorial, the Commonwealth war Cemetery, the German War Cemetery and a couple of rifle ranges, as well as other remains associated with the Great War.
These include the remains of the Tackeroo, the dismantled camp railway, which linked various buildings and service facilities.
If it's good weather, we should get some good views of Staffordshire. I estimate a 2 1/2 booter.
Meet in Audlem car park at 9 am. We should be back in Audlem by around 3.30 pm.
NB All walkers must have suitable footwear and be prepared for adverse weather, carry food and water to last for the entire walk and be suitably fit for the various lengths of walk.
Each walk is led by a nominated leader who will carry some first-aid equipment. The leader has the right to refuse to include in a group anyone who is felt not be adequately equipped.
Non-members of ARS are welcome to come on a walk but are expected to join ARS and pay the membership fee after a trial walk or two.
