Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service has won a national award for its joint initiative with Cheshire East Council on road safety in the community.

They were presented with the Road Safety in the Community Award at the Fleetsafe Awards, organised by Brake, the road safety charity at a ceremony in Birmingham on Thursday 5th June 2014.

The award, sponsored by Ocado, is given to an organisation that has worked hardest with its local community to improve road safety for all road users, and has road safety at the heart of its corporate social responsibility ethos.

Road traffic collisions can be devastating, not only to those involved, but to their friends and loved ones. Every year firefighters attend road traffic collisions, rescuing drivers and their passengers and providing emergency first aid and trauma care.

In 2012 there were 29 deaths on roads across Cheshire, 576 serious life changing injuries and a further 3,145 slight injuries.

Martin Dowle, Community Safety Manager at Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service and Councillor Bill Livesley for Cheshire East, received the award on behalf of the Service. Martin said: "This award highlights the success of our work with Cheshire East Council in delivering road safety education to local schools, both primary and secondary across Cheshire East.

"We deliver many initiatives and campaigns to drive down the number of people killed and seriously injured on our roads, from engaging with drivers on our road and motorway network, to delivering motorcycle safety events, and visiting schools to educate children of all ages on road safety.

"This particular initiative has been with Cheshire East Council and has been very successful in communicating vital information and education to young children in schools and I am so pleased it has been recognised with this award."
