Over the festive period people spend more time at home relaxing with friends and family and, consequently, the risk of fire increases. But, by taking a few simple steps, fire risks around the home can be reduced and everybody can enjoy a happy and fire safe Christmas.

· Make sure you check your smoke alarms regularly and don't remove batteries to power any Christmas presents.

· Put candles in proper holders so they cannot fall over – and don't leave them unattended.

· Don't leave fairy lights switched on when you go out or go to bed and check that they have the correctly rated fuse in the plug.

· Don't let bulbs touch anything that can easily ignite such as paper decorations or fabric. If bulbs blow then replace them.

· Keep Christmas decorations, cards and wrapping paper away from candles, open fires and any other sources of heat.

· Don't be distracted when cooking. Fire starts when your attention stops.

All the crew at Audlem Fire Station wish you a happy, peaceful but above all a fire safe Christmas and much as we like you we hope we don't see you over the holiday period for the wrong reasons.
