Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service is looking for young people to become Fire Cadets.

The Service is keen to recruit young people between the ages of 12 and 17 years of age to take part in this rewarding training scheme, which will not only be fun and enjoyable but will also give them the chance to learn new personal and social skills, and potentially obtain a professional qualification.

Vicky Wrest, Cadet Manager for Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "Being a cadet with the Service is an excellent opportunity for young people and gives them the opportunity to develop personally as well as learn about self discipline and team work."

As part of a continual training and development programme, the cadets will be provided with a free fire kit and uniform similar to that worn by firefighters, and will take part in a drill night one evening a week at the local fire station.

During this time cadets train with firefighting equipment, which includes hoses, fire appliances and ladder drills, as well as doing other outdoor activities.

Apart from drill nights cadets also take part in additional activities at weekends and during the school holidays which include residential stays, local camps, and national camp trips.

Cadets also fundraise for international projects throughout the year, which includes young people from the Cheshire Cadet units having the opportunity to go overseas on exchange visits to help with community projects and to build schools.

Cheshire East Fire Cadet units meet at fire stations one evening a week for two hours to take part in a drill night. Audlem Fire Cadets meet every Wednesday – email cadet13@cheshirefire.gov.uk or phone 07837926697

Nick Evans, Youth Engagement Manager for Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "The cadet scheme is a fantastic initiative and enables young people to make a real difference to their local community by supporting the work of the firefighters."

Anyone who is interested in finding out more information about becoming a Fire Cadet should visit the website – Cadets – or contact Vicky Wrest in the Youth Engagement Office on 01606 868427. Alternatively email the unit directly at cadet20@cheshirefire.gov.uk
