Next meeting: Thursday 19 April 2018
In a change to the original programme, Ian Jones will tell the colourful story of Ernie Martin, who, in the early years of the twentieth century, exchanged the traditional family occupation of grain milling and tenant farming in rural Staffordshire for the risks and adventure of gold prospecting in Northern Ontario, Canada.
It's a tale of (almost) rags to fabulous riches and (almost) back to rags, with Ernie becoming one of the wealthiest men in Canada before squandering most of his fortune.
There's a strong local connection to the story, as Ernie was Ian's mother's cousin and his grandfather, John Martin, is buried in Audlem cemetery.
The meeting will take place in the Scout and Guide Hall in Cheshire Street, Audlem and starts at 7.30pm. All welcome.
