Today, your Audlem Online correspondent, along with Mike Hill of Audlem Parish Council, attended a large meeting in Knutsford to hear about the launch of the Cheshire and Warrington Rural Partnership's Rural Investment Plan 2007, a five year plan to support rural areas across the county.

Imagine your correspondent's surprise when he saw the colour photograph chosen for the front cover of the plan was of his very own home, 'Audlem Online Villas', no less. But of much greater significance was the other building featured in the photo looking down Stafford Street – Audlem Post Office, resplendent with its 'post office' signage to the forefront of the splendid photograph.

Your correspondent soon pointed out to the County Council representative launching the plan that the choice of photo must mean that Audlem Post Office is safe. Surely it cannot be amongst the 2,500 branches due to be closed in the coming months. No organisation, and particularly Cheshire County Council, could possibly feature a vital rural business so prominently in its Rural Investment 5-year plan and then allow that business to be closed down by another government-run organisation!

Andrew Smith of Audlem Post Office was delighted to see his business was the only one photographed for the County's rural strategy. Without being complacent, perhaps Andrew and the rest of the community can keep their fingers crossed about the post office with a little more confidence.

After all, as the old proverb says: 'A picture is worth a thousand words".
