Many will have noticed the huge articulated trucks blocking the village centre as concrete flooring units are delivered to the Moseley's Yard site in Shropshire Street.

One resident was a little incensed to discover that as one truck manoeuvred up the narrow Old Vicarage Gardens opposite, before reversing on to the Moseley's Yard site, it flattened a load of daffodils that had been supplied by ADAS. He spoke to the driver asking him to avoid the plants but the driver clearly couldn't understand a word and he turned out to be Polish.

The village has, however, put up with the inconveniences caused by the building work with commendable tolerance. As one wag put it this morning: "At least we've moved on from the pile-driving to a pole-driving!"

Despite the nationality of the driver, the concrete slabs seem to be imported from Ireland – at what must be a considerable transport cost. Which raises the interesting question of why manufacturing concrete slabs at an economic price in Britain is no longer within our industrial capacity!
