Dr Barrie Hufton writes: "On Tuesday 15th April 2008, I swam 5km (200 lengths of a 25 metre pool) as my part in Estimation 2008 which is the major annual Marie Curie Cancer Care

fundraising event. Practice what you preach -- I mean exercise!

"Sponsored swimmers all over the UK hope to raise a total of £1.8 million.

Thanks to the generosity of the people of Audlem, I raised nearly £2000 when I last completed this event in 2000.

"I trained hard over the last week. My wife Shelagh was there as my length counter. She didn't allow me out of the pool, or reveal where she has hidden my clothes, until I had completed all 200 lengths.

"Marie Curie Cancer care provides high quality nursing, totally free to terminally ill patients. This allows them the choice of dying at home supported by their families. In addition, the charity runs ten Marie Curie hospices which promote the best quality of life for people with cancer (www.mariecurie.org.uk).

"There is a sponsorship form in the waiting room at Audlem Surgery. It will remain there for two or three weeks. Your contributions will be very gratefully received. I hope I can rely on your support.

With best wishes and thanks

Dr Barrie Hufton
