Specialist care focused on quality of life

A view from Carolyn Farmer, Home Manager at Corbrook Park in Audlem

"With this week being Dementia Awareness Week, many people are recognising how important it is to provide the right kind of care for those living with this condition which affects over 850,000 people in this country.

One in six of us over 80 have dementia and what many people don't realise is that over 40,000 people under 65 also live with the condition. So it is crucial as a society and a care industry, that we constantly evolve how we care and look after those with dementia ensuring they can have the best possible quality of life.

I am very proud to lead the team here at Corbrook Park in our beautiful country house Home set in its peaceful parkland setting. All the staff here are as passionate as I am about ensuring that all our residents have fulfilling lives including those living with dementia.

In order to provide the most appropriate and comforting surroundings, we worked with the University of Stirling, pioneers in the understanding of dementia, who have helped shape our thinking regarding how we set out and furnish our surroundings.

For example, all the fixtures and fittings through to non-reflective glass in pictures, have been designed to create a sense of calm and reassurance known to be advantageous for those living with dementia.

We are very proud of our specialist dementia care here which we encapsulate in our Cedar Philosophy which looks holistically at the person and their wellbeing and not simply the nursing requirements. Every one of us has a unique spark of life and we make it our mission to listen and learn what's important to each resident from the outset.

One of the most important aspects of this philosophy is to make this feel like home where residents are able to continue activities they enjoy and which they feel are homely- normal everyday tasks which give everyone a sense of belonging.

We see ourselves as a family and treat everyone as an individual member of that family. Our philosophy aims to enhance quality of life achieving a sense of contentment which reassures families and friends that loved ones are in the best possible place.

As much as possible, our residents live to their own timescales and we ensure we are flexible in how we help and support them. Each person needs to feel part of an accepting community which enables more personal choices and this results in a demonstrable calmness and contentedness at Corbrook Park, with residents feeling safe, secure and loved."
