On both Saturday and Sunday evenings around 6pm, domestic cats in Moorsfield Avenue and (adjacent) Matthews Way were subject to attacks by what we are increasingly convinced to be barn owls.

In the first case the cat suffered leg injuries and in the second a cat suffered major injuries and these may be life threatening (serious puncture wounds, and bites to animals rear from talons and beak).

Owls are known to attack cats from time to time especially if food is scarce and mistake them for rabbits. They swoop on them from behind and pick them up, and sometimes deliberately drop them to kill their prey.

In both cases the pets have gone into a state of shock and in our own case, our cat is unable to eat drink or use its voice and is seriously ill and likely to need surgery tomorrow.

I would recommend all cat lovers to keep their pets in during the early evenings at present!

There was the following recent newspaper article – please clickhere – with a photo of a cat being attacked in this way. Both cats attacked this weekend would seem to have been victim to the same sort of ordeal.
