The attached article has appeared in the September issue of Waterways World, the monthly canal magazine, which has just arrived. It shows that Canal & River Trust object to the plan to build houses by the canal.

The text reads:

Audlem Canalside Housing Opposed

A plan to develop 87 houses on a canalside field at Audlem on the Shropshire Union Canal has been opposed by the Canal & River Trust.

The development, in the field immediately below Lock 13 by Audlem Wharf, would be "overbearing" on the environment, according to the trust's area planner, Tim Bethany-Simmons.

"The canal adjacent to the site is designated as a conservation area," he said. "The openness of the canalside visual envelope here is very important to the local waterway landscape character."

The developer, Plotbuild, says it would be a "high quality, sustainable" development, improving links to the canal frontage.

Our thanks to Peter Silvester for sending AudlemOnline this cutting, which you need to click on to see it in full. Peter added: "If I knew what it is, I'm sure that the "canalside visual envelope" is very important! That phrase is worthy of inclusion in Private Eye's Pseud's Corner."
