We're grateful to have received these responses to Mr. Evans' appeal for information on his clock:

With regard to the Query about Poole on a clock, the History Society are grateful to the late Jack Baker who lent us the book of accounts kept by the well-known architect William Baker which is in possession of the family. I have made a note of a reference, 1749 july 'Pool the
clockmaker' probably a payment or a meeting with him. This gives an idea of date and if baptised, married or died within Audlem parish he should appear in the parish registers which have been transcribed and are online. Too early for censuses.

Celia Bloor

I was struck by the coincidence of the two oddly abbreviated first names on the two clocks referred to in AOL today. First on Charles Evans' clock article today and second on the abbreviated name on the Richard Stuart clock (article 25th Nov 18 re Celia's book discovery) – the first In-o, and the second JNo.

Some years ago, in Cambridgeshire, I noticed that in some churches the wall plaques listing the names of vicars over centuries began to change some two hundred years ago from Johannes plus surname, being abbreviated to John. plus surname (i.e. with a definite full-stop to denote the abbreviation.)

Intrigued by In-o and JNo, I browsed the internet and came across the following reply to the question, "Does the name Jno on a census stand for Jonathan?"

"Jno is an abbreviation of the Latin Johannes. In medieval Latin this was written as Jhohannes – abbreviated to Jho. It's been suggested that the second letter (h) lost its ascender over the years and came to be written as 'n'. Thus the abbreviation of Jno for John."

I wonder if this will help Mr Evans in any way? ( I'm thinking possibly In-o may not stand for Inigo but for John)

I've got no answer to the surnames Poole versus Harrison though!
