Change of direction in Audlem

Someone who likes to ensure unsure drivers head off in a different direction has swiveled a number of the signs in the Square. The result is that those looking for Newcastle are pointed to Whitchurch, and those looking for the Baptist Church might drive all the way to Nantwich – where the first church they encounter is Roman Catholic!

Sorting out which signs have been twisted is made more complex as there are currently eighteen signs, yes eighteen, around the memorial. And strangely, a new wooden pole has been inserted, already with one sign attached. At a quick estimate, that could accommodate another twenty or so signs, so the confusion, with or without swiveled signs, could be about to increase.

A local enthusiast of board games has suggested that the village should approach Waddington's, the makers of Monopoly, to see if there's a new game idea in the Audlem signs saga – every player has to guess at each move if it's the right sign, or a twisted one, before eventually passing Go and winning!
