AUDLEM PROBUS CLUB:

A LOOK AT LIFE BEFORE"POPEYE" & "MICKEY MOUSE"

Who doesn't recall happy childhood memories of "Popeye", "Mickey Mouse" and "Donald Duck", cartoon characters that have been around since the early 20th century? But how far back do their origins really go?

Auldem Probus Club members, being retired folk with long memories, are about to find out this Thursday (April 24) when Les Pickford gives an illustrated talk about "Cartoons and how to draw them". Without spoiling surprises Les has up his sleeve, suffice to say that cartoons were first used long before Disney films were made. And they're featured in the Royal Academy of Art collections in London!

Les himself is retired, having been Head of Art at Shavington High School (now Academy), but, as a volunteer at Nantwich Museum, produces some of their historical ilustrations. His talk on Thursday will concentrate mainly on the conventions used to present a funny drawing, while he demonstrates what is involved as he talks – with a twist for the audience!

Audlem Public Hall, from 10am. 24th April.

Retired professionals and business people looking for opportunities to increase their social and cultural activities, including day trips and holidays, with like-minded people, are always welcome as guests and new members.
