There is good news about the canal – the Shropshire Union has been re-opened late this morning through Audlem. Boats can now travel south beyond Tyrley Locks to the south of Market Drayton.

There will not be access beyond the breach at Shebdon – that's between Knighton and Norbury Junction – for some time as it is a very large hole in the bottom of the canal (see our story and photographs earlier today).

The re-opening does, however, mean that the canal and countryside through south Cheshire and north Shropshire can be enjoyed once again.

Several boats have already proceeded south through Audlem locks and local canal-related businesses will be hoping many others will follow. The village has been very quiet during recent days, a reminder of how important the canal is for the local tourist trade.
