Our engineering team are finalising their design for the embankment repair and will conclude this this week. Our contractor has already mobilised to site and preparations are well in hand for commencing the detailed repair works – they have been concentrating on carrying out trials for the repair work to make sure that this will be successful.

In terms of navigation, our aim is to reopen the canal in time for the October half term with a provisional date for reopening currently 24th October 2009. This date is still subject to confirmation with our contractors and there will be a further update later this week.

The canal remains navigable from the South up to the winding hole at Shebden wharf just North of bridge 44 and from the North down to the winding hole at Park Heath bridge 48. The canal and local businesses remain open as usual in all other areas.

We are also reviewing our winter stoppage programme for the Shropshire Union Canal in the light of this current emergency stoppage.
