Carolyn Wilde writes: "Flowers and birds are favourite subjects for the camera of WI member, Ann Rutter. Larger than life landscapes featured too in her photographic account of her month-long trip to California. There were beautiful pictures of the wild Californian coast then we were transported to Las Vegas and the Grand Canyon to get a bird's eye view of both from a helicopter. It was much enjoyed by all.

"Whilst voters in America were voting in what was to be a momentous election for that country, and probably the world, we had our own president to vote for. November brings AGMs around again for all Women's Institutes. Burleydam welcomed Frances Evans and Gwen Jarvis from Ash WI as tellers. No election was needed for the committee for 2008/9 and the existing members of the committee, Sheila Beeston, Margaret Blackburn, Jean Cornes, Sarah Lunt, Mary Stevenson and Carolyn Wilde will serve another term. The incumbent President, Sarah Lunt, was elected unopposed for another year and Margaret Hollins thanked Sarah for all her hard work and for bringing such a warm and inclusive atmosphere to the Institute during her time as president.

"The competition for a holiday snap was won by Eva Sadler, 2nd was Sarah Lunt and 3rd Margaret Hollins. Eva Sadler was also the winner, for the second year running, of the silver salver for the member winning the most points in the competitions over the year. Second was Sheila Beeston and Gladys Burrough was third. Congratulations to them all!

We meet in the Community Room at the back of the church in Burleydam. "Visitors are always welcome. The next meeting is on 2 December at 7.30 p.m. The speaker on the Japanese craft of Temari will be Margery Monbiot. Bring a spare pair of tights!"
