Burleydam and District Women's Institute

reports: "After watching demonstrations and listening to speakers over the year, it was time for members of Burleydam WI to demonstrate their collective flair for artistic arrangement. Sheila Beeston and Margaret Blackburn, members of the Committee, planned and presented the evening's entertainment. Members had been asked to bring foliage with them. Sheila and Margaret also brought containers, oasis, candles and those glittering items that no Christmas table decoration should be without. "Delving into the box of gold and silver, President, Sarah Lunt unearthed two robins. The robins probably gave her the edge over her competitors and her arrangement took first prize. Margaret Hollins favoured variegated foliage for her entry which was placed second. Third was one of our newer members, Gladys Burrow. It is always good to see new people entering the competitions.

"Eva Sadler was the winner of the silver salver for gaining the most points over the year's competitions. She was presented with the award by Sarah Lunt.

"The refreshments provided by the Stevenson sisters, Eva, Helen and Mary, were superb as always. Mince pies, chocolate gateau and Christmas cake were a fitting reward after all the effort that members put into their decorations.

"So another year draws to a close. The programme for next year has been compiled by former secretary and long time member, Doreen Hayward. Members were delighted to welcome Doreen back after her recent illness.

"Carolyn Wilde has taken over as secretary. We have a new member of the committee, Jean Cornes, who has also taken on the new role of Show Co-ordinator. We shall look forward to planning our entries to the Cheshire and Nantwich shows in 2008.

Your correspondent promises, after this plethora of Christmas cliches, to return to more measured reporting in 2008!"
