Burleydam W I Birthday Meeting

Visitors from neighbouring institutes, and members, were greeted with a glass of wine when they attended the 68th birthday of Burleydam W I on July 2nd.

The speaker for the evening was Mrs Marion Canning, a lady toastmaster, who told us how she met some resistance to the idea that she could do the job which by tradition was usually a male preserve.

She looked very smart, dressed in her Savile Row designed uniform of red short jacket and waistcoat, white shirt and tie, with a black skirt. Her job took in so much more than the announcing of speakers at a dinner, from soothing the brides mother at a wedding to supplying safety pins for a broken zip!

Her role at a function was to see that everything ran smoothly and on time, But of course there were many occasions when it didn't and she told us some very funny happenings in her 15yrs in the job. Liz Gentil gave thanks to Mrs Canning and also won the Competition for a 'Grace'. 2nd M Hollins 3rd J Cornes.

The committee provided a buffet supper, of pate and cheese which was very good but did not compare to the 5 course meal that some members had enjoyed at the Harthill Cookery School recently. Members who baked cakes for the W I tent at the Cheshire Show were thanked and travel arrangements for the August visit to Belton Cheese were made.

Unfortunately, secretary Karen Gee had broken her foot and another member Joyce Cross was having a back operation, so neither were present but joint president Margaret Hollins wished them both a speedy recovery.
