Carolyn Wilde reports: "The month of November means Annual Meeting time again for WI's. Time to reflect on the past year as the secretary prepares the Committee's report and time for the committee to hope that one of their number will be prepared to stand for the office of president. If no one will then the WI must be suspended.

"At Burleydam's Annual Meeting members were pleased when Sarah Lunt agreed to stand again for President and was elected unopposed. As in previous years we welcomed tellers from Ash WI who handled the procedure with their usual competence and good humour.

"Mary Stevenson, our Treasurer, presented the Annual Financial Statement. Given the increase in room hire charges this year (they had doubled) members expressed their satisfaction with the figures and the Treasurer was thanked for all her hard work over the year.

Acting Secretary, Carolyn Wilde, read the Committee's Report which described an active and varied year which included presenting the resolution at the Federation's AGM, joining with Richmond Village WI to run a successful coffee morning and entering exhibits at the Produce Show in Audlem as well as welcoming a wide range of interesting speakers.

"Carolyn Wilde then gave a talk on the theme of Crime and Punishment which looked at how people viewed a particular crime and the kind of punishment they thought should be given. Decisions taken at various stages of the criminal justice process by prosecution or defence could influence the outcome and members were told of the various sentencing options available.

"The competition, a wrapped present for a child, encouraged a large number of entries. The winner was Sheila Beeston, second was Eva Sadler and third was Barbara Tomlinson. All the parcels will go to Hope House."
