This week's Nantwich Chronicle carries an extensive story, with photograph, of the disbanding of Buerton WI after Buerton School, the last community building in the village, was axed by Cheshire education chiefs. The WI branch had met at the school for the past 57 years.

Joint president Dorothy Pedley is quoted: "We did our best to fight the closure but we lost. We don't know what will happen yet. We are all disappointed about this because we have such an enjoyable time in the WI. The Cheshire Federation of Women's Institutes tried to help fight the closure but it's a sad end to an era."

Villagers are now fighting to defend the school playing field from possible housing developers. Buerton WI secretary Eileen Cornes says: "It would not be acceptable to have a housing estate built on this land. WI members have been left in limbo and if the building goes, we'll have nothing."

Former Buerton WI members are invited to the farewell party on Thursday 14th December.
