Buerton Primary school, which fought off a similar threat in 1999, is now earmarked for closure. The governers say they have few options left and will have to look at federating with another school.

Chairman of Buerton School governors, Janet Furber, said: "It looks as though our best hope of survival is to federate. We are looking at a rural alliance which would mean education at our school building will still exist. Keeping our school open isn't really an option and we have to move forward. We will fight for some form of education on site and to keep the building for community use."
