Brine Leas High School in Nantwich, attended by most Audlem senior school pupils, is set to follow Malbank School and change its status to allow more flexibility and freedom of choice for parents and students. The school governors support the proposal to convert to foundation status in September and believe the people best placed to decide how the school should develop are parents, staff and members of the local community.

Headteacher Michael Butler said: "We believe that as a foundation school we can best ensure the school's success in the future. It gives increased autonomy to determine its own future. In Nantwich both secondary headteachers believe that this would significantly improve our capacity to build a Nantwich Learning Community with a family of primary school and tertiary college partners."

In foundation schools, governing bodies consist more of parents, staff and the local community with fewer political or local authority representatives. But the school would still retain links with Cheshire County Council education bosses.
