By lunchtime today the Wharf was already busy with the historic narrowboats gathering for tomorrow's Festival of Transport.
Hanging in the air was that never-forgotten nostalgic smell of steam engines as the brightly-painted boats crowded together along both sides of the canal, a scene that must have been commonplace a century and more ago.
