On the first dull and damp day after the long spell of glorious weather, our small party and 3 dogs set off from the Combermere Business Centre to follow the woodland bluebell walk trail through the Abbey grounds. The extended opening period and timed entrance slots meant that this year, we felt as though we had the woods almost to ourselves rather than being part of a crowd as had been the case in previous years.

The birds gave us full-throated accompaniment and the bluebells themselves were spectacular. Whilst the sun did not shine to provide much light and shade contrast, the overnight rain seemed to have enhanced the greens of the foliage to set off the rich colours of the bluebells, campion and primroses.

After a gentle hour's stroll, we arrived back in time for lunch at The Old Piggery cafe to round off the visit. We are lucky to be able to take advantage of the Abbey's annual display.
