He was born on the 27th January 1832 in Daresbury, Cheshire, England and died on the 14th January 1898 in Guildford Surrey.
He was educated at Christ Church, Oxford where he had an Honours Degree in Mathematics where he wrote on the subjects of Mathematics Logic, Linear Algebra and Voting Theory.
He was best known for his fantasy children's books " Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" and others.
