People need to check that they are registered to vote and have suitable photo ID to vote in person at polling stations.
The deadline to register to vote is 16 April.
Residents are being urged to make sure they are ready to cast their ballot in May by reminding them to register to vote if they have moved house recently or recently turned 18.
It only takes five minutes to register online at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote
The deadline to apply for free valid ID is 5pm on 24 April.
Voters are also now required by law to provide acceptable photo ID when voting in person. The full list of accepted photo ID is available on the Electoral Commission's website, along with more information about the new requirement and details of how to apply for the free ID -- called a Voter Authority Certificate -- at: electoralcommission.org.uk/voterID
To apply for the Voter Authority Certificate, voters will need to provide a photo, full name, date of birth, the address at which they are registered to vote and their National Insurance number.
