There may be the no small matter of Christmas to negotiate first, but many in Audlem and area are already thinking about a very special day in their calendar – New Year's Day. The BAGS (Burleydam & Audlem Golf Society) was formed in 1983 with members from the surrounding district of Audlem. The climax of the year's activities is always the New Year's Day meeting when golfers play for the Hangover Trophy which was donated by the late Bob Monk.

This particular meeting has proved to be very popular with many golfers from the area taking part, so it's become part of the Audlem district's New Year celebrations. It has proved popular in bringing together the various social groups of the village and it is always a huge success. The present organisers are John Cooke and Harry Knapper.

The Rules used for the Hangover Trophy are the Four Ball Florida Scramble – we won't go into the details at present for fear of non-golfers wondering what sort of species lives amongst them!

The winning team will be presented with the Hangover Trophy and a small personal prize. The 2nd and 3rd teams will also receive prizes, as also will nearest the pin on the 12th and 16th holes.

This year's Hangover trophy was won by the team of Nigel Mathews (capt) John Cooke, Brian Mair & Rob Bonell. Second was Ernie Hankey, Bob Spibey, Roy Mills and Tom Measures. In third place was Andrew Anderson, J Knight and G Walley. Thirty eight golfers played and there were 50, including guests, for the hot-pot lunch.

If you are interested in playing this New Year at Brookfield Golf Club, Hankelow, please contact Harry Knapper on 01270 811544 or John Cooke on 01270 811542. Many have already signed up so you'll be in very good company.
