The annual Bagpipe & Hurdy-Gurdy Day took place in fresh surroundings last Saturday, at the Red Lion, flagship pub of Joules Brewery, Market Drayton.
The Mouse Room provided welcome extra space as around thirty musicians and quite a few non-players attended.
At least seven players came from Lancashire including hurry-gurdy maker Neal Brook plus others from Cheshire, Shropshire, Wales and London. Bagpipe maker Sean Jones came from Staffordshire.
This year Bagpipe & Hurdy-Gurdy players achieved parity with about eleven of each.
As usual there were a few new faces, not least Peter Karssen who came by train from London to Telford, then cycled the rest of the way with his Hurdy-Gurdy. Well done, Peter.
Many types of bagpipes were on view: Border pipes, Northumbrian, Leicestershire, Flemish and Italian – but no Scottish!
