Eleven members of AWEG (Audlem Wildlife & Ecology Group) enjoyed a visit to Burton Mere Wetlands on the Wirral on Friday.

The RSPB site has three hides and a wide variety of birds, butterflies and flowers were spotted on the day including four types of warbler, black tailed godwits, dunlin, redshank, egrets and large numbers of avocets, some of which now have chicks.

The avocet has made an amazing comeback in recent years. The distinctively-patterned black and white wader with a long up-curved beak is the emblem of the RSPB and symbolises the bird protection movement in the UK more than any other species.

Its return in the 1940s and subsequent increase in numbers represents one of the most successful conservation and protection projects.

AWEG has another trip this coming Wednesday with a 9.00am departure to LLanymynach near Oswestry with other nearby sites at Dolgoth and LLynclys plus a pub lunch at the White Lion.

The group's next meeting is on Tuesday 7th June in the Conservatory of the Bridge Inn.
